Earlier in the day, the Nigerian police ruled to disband their highly controversial unit – the Special Anti-Robbery Squad – that has long been accused of abuse of power and heavy-handed methods.

Sputnik comes live from outside the Nigerian diplomatic mission in London where activists from the local Nigerian community gathered to condemn the police violence in their home country.

The protest in London comes amid nationwide demonstrations against Nigeria’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad – a police unit that has often been accused of extortion, torture, blackmail and other fraudulent practices.

The latest public action was triggered by a video circulating in social media in which a SARS member was filmed shooting a man dead.
